Their earlier kings were followers of the Jain religion but his came to an end when Mahendra Verman I (600-630 AD) was converted to Shaivism. Most of the rock carvings and temples were completed during the reigns of Narsimha Verman I (630-668 AD) AND Narsimha Verman II (700-728 AD).
Places of interest
Arjuna's Penance : Visit thus place, which offers one of the freshest, most realistic and unpretentious rock carvings. The major attraction includes a huge rock on which mythical story of the river Ganges is carved. In addition to this there are panels that depict animals, deities, and other semi-divine creatures and fables from Panchtantra and Arjuna doing a penance to obtain a boon from Lord Shiva.
Krishna Mandapam : Explore one of the earliest rock-cut temples, which will leave you spellbound. A pastoral scene is carved on the walls that depicts Lord Krishna lifting up the Govardhana Mountain to protect the kinfolk from the wrath of Varuna, the god of rain.
Shore Temples : These are reputed as one of the most beautiful and romantic temples in India. The two spires of these temples contain the shrines of Shiva and Vishnu. Most of the detail of the carving has disappeared over the ages yet a remarkable amount remains especially inside the temple.
Rathas: The architectural prototype of all the Dravadian temple with their imposing gopurams, vimanas, multi-pillared halls and sculptured walls are a treat to the eyes.
