History
History
Madurai's history dates back to more than 2000 years back when it was the capital of the Pandayan Kings. In the 10th century AD it was taken by Chola emperors until Pandyan regained their independanc3e in the 12th century. It was ruled by the Muslims in 14th century and passed into British hands after the wars of Carnatic.
Places of interest
Minakshi Amman Temple : It is an example of the excellence of Dravidian architecture. Dedicated to Minakshi, the consort of Lord Shiva, it is surrounded by five gopurams. Each gopuram is covered by a profusion of the multi colored ../images of gods, goddess, animals and countless other mythological character. The major attraction of the temple remains the thousand-pillar hall, each of which is intricately carved and surpasses other in beauty.
Thirumalai Naik Palace : The palace presents an example of the excellence of Indo-Saracenic architectural styles. Initially it was four times bigger than what it is today. Pleasure garden and surrounding defensive walls have all ruined with time but the main entrance gate, dancing hall and the main gate remind the glory of this monument.
Gandhi Museum : Visit the museum that houses some of the most rare artifacts of a bygone era. It offers countless objects that give a clear account of the history of the independence of India. The major attraction of the museum is the blood stained 'dhoti' of Mahatma Gandhi from the assassination. You can also shop at a bookshop in the same ground that is stocked with plenty of books many of them associated with Mahatma Gandhi.

The principal event is Chithirai that celebrates the marriage of Sri Minakshi to Sundareshwara. In addition to this Teppam Festival also attracts tourists from across India.
