It is based on the zoo of the future concept where people can view creatures in their natural habitat, safeguarded from human interference.
Located at the tip of Point Grant on the western end of Phillip Island in Australia, the over a year-old Seal Rocks Sea Life Centre provides a detailed interpretation and understanding of Australia’s largest fur seal colony, the great white shark (the seal’s main predator), seabirds, etc says a brochure on the center.
Malcome Turner who created the displays at the center said, “In order to save nature and its wildlife, it is vital that human beings are made aware of their impact on the world around them. The Seal Rocks Sea Life Centre will provide them with both the motivation and the information to look after their environment.”
The visitor gets to view the smallest creatures in the Pools of Life, varied spedes of seabirds, learn about seals and their main predator, the great white shark, and the history of the Seal Rocks area, from the pioneers who hunted the seals to the scientists who studied them.
Then stop by the rock pools and watch the creatures who take refuge there. Take a cruise to the Seal Rocks, which lie two kilometers out into the Bass Strait from Point Grant. Here seals loll on Seal Rock and the smaller black rock seals occupy these islands all year, raising their young
in the relative safety of low-lying cliffs. The rocks here provide the perfect platform for the seals to rest in between their hunting forays into deeper water.
But it’s not so safe for the seals, for a frequent visitor here is the great white shark which preys on weak, sick, young seals. These sharks maintain the ecological balance of the area, preventing a seal population explosion and resulting in starvation in the area.
If the fresh sea air has whipped up your appetite, there is the swish Lady Nelson Restaurant where you can dive whilst watching the colors of the sunset. There’s Bass Brasserie and Coffee Shop which serves lunch and light refreshments. At the Magic Photo Studio, you can take away some memories and the Souvenir Shop is stocked with nifty things that will remind you of Seal Rocks, once you are home,
