Travel to Best Of The Alps
It’s a landscape that is both stunning and beckoning. Sheer mountains with summits draped in snow. Awesome. Fearsome. It’s a vista on a majestic scale and spans five countries. France, Switzerland, Austria, Italy and Germany are united by a mountain range—the 1,200-km long Alps. And in the midst of the range glitter the 11 best known alpine resorts like a diamond in a tiara, said Hubert Schwarzler, director of Lech Tourismus. (Lech am Arlberg is part of the consortium called the Best of the Alps.)
The list of resorts reads like a Who’s Who of European winter and summer tourism. And these scenic destinations count royalty and other celebrities among their regular visitors, we were told at a press conference held recently in Mumbai, when the assets and virtues of each resort were extolled. All have their own distinctive charm—wild, lovely terrain, green and lush in summer, and bleak, lofty and white in winter. Whether it’s St Anton am Arlberg, Lech am Arlberg, St Moritz, Kitzbuhel, Zermatt, Seefeld, Grindelwald, Garmisch-Parten kirchen, Cortina d’ Ampezzo, Chamonix or Davos ... they have certain things in common, we were told. All of them are easily accessible and close to the centers of European culture and airports. Whether one reaches the resorts by road or rail, one can indulge in a good deal of visual wallowing—as one drives down the mountain roads with their vertiginous views. The Best of the Alps resorts have a homely village atmosphere where intimate family-run accommodation is the norm. In the cosy mountain refuges and the lively apres ski bars and eateries, tourists can have a melange of culinary offerings from different regions.
Whether one enjoys chamber music or snow-boarding, a hike or hockey, skiing or skating, playing golf on ice with red balls, traveling on the scenic Glacier Express... the Best of the Alps have it all.
In summer, the green pastures blush with colorful alpine flowers and the mountains resonate with the tinkle of cowbells.
There’s mountain biking climbing, paragliding, arm a number of other sports for the hardy. Those who, prefer to relax can just soak in the splendid views that are like a tonic for the spirit.
