The Keoladeo Ghana National Park, also known as Bharatpur Sanctuary, was built in the late 19th century as a private hunting reserve for the maharajas of Bharatpur. Keoladeo Ghana means the temple of lord Shiva in a dense forest. The wet ecosystem of the area makes it an ideal environment for a large variety of birds, including the Siberian crane which is on the verge of extinction. The park which witnessed thousands of ducks and geese being killed during the British Raj, is now home to over 370 species of birds. The bird population in the area began to increase rapidly since Ghana was given the status of a sanctuary in 1956 and a national park in 1981. The park, a paradise for bird watchers, wildlife photographers, researchers and nature lovers has been declared a world heritage site by UNESCO.
