Description of site: The dam is constructed across
the river Manali, forming a reservoir which holds water throughout the year
with maximum levels during the southwest monsoon months. The catchment area
has an undulating topography
Climatic conditions: Tropicalmonsoon climate, with
an average annual rainfall of 2500 mm. The maximum temperature is 39' C and
minimum 21' C
Eonomic and social values: The reservoir meets th entire
irrigation and drinking water needs of Trichu district
Fauna: Nilgiri langur, slender Loris, sambar, spotter
deer, sloth bear are among the mammalian fauna a this region. Avifauna includes
Indian hornbill, great black woodpecker, great-eared nightjar, Rufous-bellied
hawk eagle, Wynad laughing thrush, etc.
Special floral values: About 13 endemic plants are
reportedly present in this area, including: Semecarpus travancorica, Mitrephora
grandiflora, Terminalia travencorensis, Orophea thomsonii, Hopea erosa, Diospyros
erumenata, Algaia barberi, A.maiae, Szygium chauaran. S.malabaricum, Madura
bourdillonii, and Canthium travencoricumies
