In September 1995, the volcano of Mount Ruapehu erupted into life and brought Whakapapa’s spring ski season to an early close. The area is open again this year and its dramatic volcanic terrain of lava cliffs, gullies and volcanic cones guarantee awesome ski fields. According to vulcanologists the mountain has a history of erupting every 50 years so skiing here is held to be fairly safe again.
Whakapapa is the main winter sports centre on the North Island, and also New Zealand’s largest developed skiing area. With 24 lifts spread over 400ha, this vast scenic wonderland can handle up to 24,000 skiers an hour. One of the reasons for its popularity is on-slope accommodation. You can walk straight from the ski fields to your lodge or hotel, and the nightlife on the mountain is excellent.
Whakapapa’s stand-alone beginner’s area, Happy Valley, is probably the best learner’s area in New Zealand. It has everything from its own ski school and rental shop to a cafeteria and possibly the smallest chairlift in the world. There are usually special packages available for first timers to ease the hassle and cost associated with learning to ski. For intermediate skiers Whakapapa has over 30 groomed trails, and for the sport’s masters 250m of skiing above the lifts with plenty of steep chutes, couloirs and long sections of virgin snow. There is also excellent off-piste skiing.
New Zealand has plenty of broad, open slopes where you can cut loose. All you need is some basic training and a totally go for-it attitude
