Rome has more than 300 fountains. The famous fountain filled Piazza Novana
that was built on the site of an old Roman stadium has helped the city to
gain another nickname as the City of Fountains. The Trevi Fountain is very
famous. It istraditionally believed that if you toss a coin in the fountain
you will return to Rome.
It is located at the end of the Aqua Virgo, an aqueduct constructed in 19
BC that brings water from the Salone Springs. The fountain was completed in
1762. The central figure of the fountain, Neptune is god of the sea who rides
a shell shaped chariot pulled by two sea horses guided by a Triton. One horse
is calm, the other restive to represent the moods of the sea.
To the left of Neptune is a statue representing Abundance and on the right
a statue representing Salubrity. The Fontana delta Barcaccia was built in
1629 by Bernini’s father; Pietro is lesser known but frequently visited because
it is at the foot of Rome’s Spanish Steps. This is a great place to stop for
coffee and trace the steps of famous writers.
Fontana dei Riumi was built by Bernini for Pope Innocent X, the four giants
to represent four great rivers, the Danube, the Ganges, the Nile and Rio delta
Plata. The Fontana del Tritone was built by Bernini along with Triton, who
was half man and half fish.
