Mt. Hutt, the first ski are to open in the southern Hemisphere, is still one of the best all round skiing desination in New Zealand. Nestled on the majestic Couthern Alps, high above the Canterbury plains, it has superb terrain for all levels of skier. If your are a beginner you can practice on the wide open spaces of Braodway intermediates can cruise on Morning Glory, Huber’s Run, Wayleggo and International thrill seekers can zero out on hari raising runs like Towers, South face and Virgin Mile, and adventurers can explore 700 m of untouched, outback terrain on North Peak Run before getting a heli ride back to be Mt. hutt bowl.
Mt. Hutt’s high altitude and southwesterly aspect mean it gets reliable snow falls for six months of each year; to guarantee the slopes are always covered with fresh snow dare’s also a snowmaking machine. The area is also renowned its breathtaking panoramic scuts of the Southern Alps, endims green alluvial plains, the meandering Rakaia River and the deep blue Pacific Ocean.
If you want to maximize your skiing time at Mt Hutt, stay at Mcthven — a picturesque farm-mew town with comfortable accommodation for skiers. Methven’s mizhtlife might not match Queenstown’s, but it does have a selection of good restaurant and bars. If you want to take a day off from skiing you can hire bikes and explore the area, visit salmon farms, go jetboating, horseriding, trekking or just chat and read in a local cafe. Alternately, you can stay in Christchurch — a 90mins drive away — and commute to the slopes each day.
Highlights at Mt Hutt include the North Peak Run and heliskiing. The North Peak Run is one of the most thrilling and easily accessible off-field runs in the country. It has 700 vertical metres of snow in complete wilderness only a 15mins walk from the Mt Hutt summit. After a wild trip down you’re flown back
to Mount Hutt carpark by helicopter. Heliskiing is available at Mt Hutt from 1 July to 30 September. A typical half day includes over 1800 vertical metres (in 3 runs) of amazing fresh snow and terrain. A half day costs approximately NZ$350.
