City Travel Rome
Like in most places of Italy, churches are
impressive landmarks in the towns and cities of Rome. In Rome, churches double
up as impressive art galleries and museums, thanks to the rich artwork of
their interiors and exteriors. Rome’s churches are especially impressive since
most of the art work has been done by world famous artists.
Over the years the city has become synonymous with the Church. It is the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church and the Pope resides at the Vatican. St. Peter’s church records the maximum tourist footfalls in Rome. It is one of the world’s great Christian symbols. It was built in the 4th century over Saint Peter’s tomb.
Another church that is worth visiting is San Giovanni. Reason: this is where the popes resided before the center of the church was shifted to Avignon, France. The staircase here is believed to be the one Christ climbed at his trial. Sant’Andrea delta Valle was built in 1624 by Giacomo delta Porta with the second highest dome in Rome. San Marco church was founded in 336 AD. It is built on the site where the evangelist St. Mark stayed. Sant’lgnazio church is a good example of Baroque art.
San Nicola in Carcere is a 12th Century church, built over three temples. Santa Maria Maggiore church is situated on the top of Esquiline Hill. It is a visitor’s delight since the decorations inside the church are done in gold. The Gesu church was opened in 1584. It is the church of the Jesuits. San Luigi dei Francesca church is well known for the side chapel that contains three Caravaggio paintings, including ‘The Calling of St. Matthew’.
