National Park, Jungle trekking in Malaysia's Taman Negara
Visitors to Taman Negara have only two options for moving about and seeing things – by boat or on foot. Apart from river boating, trekking is the most popular activity in the park.
Trekking in Taman Negara doesn’t require any great skill, fitness or equipment unless overnight treks are planned. There are walks of various durations, ranging from an hour’s stroll to a nine day climb to the summit of Gunung Tahan. Climbs like the latter should not be undertaken lightly as they require fitness, preparation, equipment and good guiding. Most park visitors will participate in treks of a few hours maximum and these can be attempted by most fit people. The river offers a pleasant alternative for those who can’t or don’t want to return from their destination on foot.
Good walking shoes are essential and, in most instances, sneakers are more than adequate. Since Taman Negara is a rainforest you should always be prepared to get wet. The biggest problems for most walkers are heat and humidity, so drinking water is essential. On long walks it is always a good idea to drink as much water as possible prior to departure. The high humidity may also result in excessive salt loss through perspiration, so trekkers also need to replace lost body salts.
To keep cool, wear lightweight clothing and a hat. Another possible irritant is insects, and in really wet weather, leeches (see General Health, page 14). Fortunately, none of them will cause long term damage, so relax and enjoy the walk.
