THE SCOTTISH BORDERS WALK
The Scottish Borders is a region of immense beauty with a romantic atmosphere, beautiful landscapes, excellent hill walking, rich culture and fascinating heritage. The borders were wilder than our “Wild West” for over 500 years. This is where “law” was made by the mighty. Walk the land scarred by turbulent history from the days of the Romans.
You will become part of the Scottish past through tales and folklore, the land of Sir Walter Scott from the Eldon Hills, whose valley was formed by a 13th century wizard Michael Scott (Michele Scot in Dante’s Inferno) to settle a dispute with the devil, to the land where King Arthur and his knights roamed.
Travel back into history. Visit the Traquair House, the oldest inhabited house in Scotland visited by Mary Queen of Scots and 27 monarchs. Visit Melrose Abbey with its soft pink stone that has stood since the 12th century and where Robert the Bruce’s heart was brought from the Holy Land and buried by a loyal friend. Visit Smaillholm, a classic peel tower protecting the tumultuous borderland against the marauding enemy now watching over the gentle countryside where tranquillity reigns.
Walk through heather covered hills and quiet woodlands where the silence is broken only by the sounds of a wild grouse and capercailles, and down coastal cliff paths viewing nesting sites for over thousands of bird,. Experience the lovely coastal villages, historic castles, magnificent graceful River Tweed, peaceful rolling hills, ancient of a land known as much for its tweeds as it’s salmon a land of beauty, of history and of legends.
