Description of site: This freshwater lake of Srinagar
is shallow .with a maximum depth of 3 m. A typical example of an ecologically
sick lake, most of its expanse is infested with weeds, and in certain areas
navigation is difficult. The waters of the lake are alkaline
Climatic conditions: Montane valley climate with
a pronounced cold season from October to March (average temperature 7.5°C),
and warm summers (average temperature 19.8° C). January is the coldest month
(-2°C to 3°C), and July the warmest (34 - 35°C). The average annual rainfall
is 551 mm. Summer monsoon rainfall scanty. Most of the precipitation is in
the form of snow (January-March)
Principal vegetation: Major aquatic vegetation species
include Ceratophyllum demersum, Potamogeton natans, and Nelumbo nucifera.
One hundred and sixty seven taxa representing six classes of algae have been
recorded. There is a dominance of Bacilloriophyceae and Chlorophyceae
Land tenure: State-owned. There is a dominance of Bacilloriophyceae
and Chlorophyceae
Land use: Agriculture and fishing, mainly for mirror carp.

Disturbances and threats: The lake is highly polluted due
to direct discharge of sewage and effluents from human settlements in the
vicinity. Large areas of the lake have been encroached upon. Recent studies
have shown that changes in the chemical and biological factors of the lake
are indicative of a degraded ecosystem which poses a threat to waterfowl that
visit the wetland
Fauna: Reported to be attracting waterfowl, though no census
appears to have been conducted
