Description of site: From Thicksey
onwards to Shey, the Indus divides into a number of channels which have led
to the formation of several islands where small pockets of forests have developed.
The road from Thicksey to Shey runs along the north bank of the Indus river
Climatic conditions: Arid Tibetan climate characterised by appreciable differences
between sun and shade, and night and day temperatures. Summer temperatures
range from 0°C to 30°C, and winter temperatures from -10°C toas low as- 40oC.
Humidity and precipitation are low (average annual is about 75 mm)

Land tenure: Owned by the State Forest and Fisheries Departments
Conservation measures taken: Trees have been planted along
the riverside and on the islands Land use: Water is used for drinking and
fishing, and the surrounding area is used for grazing of domestic livestock

for privatisation. Tourist facilities are likely to expand in the near future
Disturbances and threats: Overuse by tourists, who picnic
on the small islands, could lead to deterioration of the site and disturb
waterfowl

extent along the river shores

wagtail and brown-headed gull
