The Peak, as locals call it, is one of several world-class ski fields in the Southern Lakes area. It offers a tantalizing combination of well-groomed trails plunging valleys and extensive off piste skiing terrain — not to mention drop-dead views. A multi-million-dollar stow making system ensures cover from top to bottom. In July and August you can ski late into the evening.
In addition to excellent conditions, Garonet Peak is both accessible — in terms of getting there, and getting around once you’re up there — and has first class facilities. If you’re staying in Queenstown you can be up the tarmac read and riding the slopes in less than 30 mins. Once you’ve reached the ski fields there are quad, triple and double chairs, a T-bar and a platter lift to take you where ever you want to go.
If you’ve never skied before or want to improve your style and technique, this is one of the best places in the country to take some lessons. There’s 10ha of wide, well-groomed runs for beginners and excellent training programmes. If you want to try something new you can learn the powder methods of alpine descent or how to snowboard or telemark. For pros there are also chutes and back bowls. Coronet Peak also offers night skiing three times a week from mid-July to mid-September.
