Disturbances and threats: Poaching, unregulated fishing,
invasion by cattle, pigs, and domestic ducks
Fauna: This wetland harbours several species of
waterfowl. It is notable for being the only sizeable breeding ground for the
pheasant-tailed jacana. Up to 400-450 jacanas were recorded recently. It is
the winter haunt of migratory waders, several species of migrating wagtails,
and predators such as marsh harrier and osprey. Rare birds such as ruddy crake
and purple heron are seen. The bronze-winged jacana, an extremely rare bird,
was reported to have appeared here a few years ago.
The other waterfowl that have been recorded here include: dabchick, shag,
little cormorant, grey heron, pond heron, cattle egret, little egret, yellow
bittern, garganey, cotton teal, pariah kite, brahminy kite, black-winged kite,
red-wattled lapwing, little-ringed plover, green sandpiper, common sandpiper,
fantail snipe, black-winged stilt, whiskered tern, gull-billed tern, white-breasted
kingfisher, black bittern, grey wagtail, and pied wagtail
