The air is fresh and feels cool and damp on the skin. The breeze lifts up every now and then, laden with sea moisture. The smell of wet earth, palm leaves and wild grass is a sun kissed fragrance common to south India’s coastal belt.
Here at Kovalam beach, other bits of exotica float together. Clear blue skies. Quiet stretches of palm fringed bays. Huge waves rolling up in jumbo curls before subsiding in a pile of froth. A stray fisherman’s net etches a neat collage at the far end of the sea. This could well be your very own patch of paradise.
Kovalam is a quiet and neat little city at the very southern tip of Trivandrum. It was known as the summer resort of the Maharajah of Travancore. The connoisseur that he was, the Maharajah, handpicked this tiny coastal village and built a delightful retreat for himself. High atop a natural hill overlooking the wide expanse of the Arabian Sea stands Halycon Castle, now reconverted into a deluxe hotel.
The entire property has now been bought by the India Tourism Development Corporation and developed into a complete beach resort with a marketing agreement with the Radisson chain in the U.S. There are luxurious beach cottages, complete units in themselves called “The Palm Grove” which is situated right on the beach front. Further up the hill, which juts out into the sea is the main hotel with 72 double layers built into the hillside. Every room faces the sea and has its very own sun deck. A swimming pool nestles at the top of the beach resort with a coffee shop nearby. Another unit of 72 rooms facing the ocean is under construction and promises to be the last word in comfort
Apart from the ITDC resort, the other tourist centre is the Kerala oursm Development Corporation’s hotel Samundhra and a large number of small paying guest outlets. This ensures a level of privacy, no amount of one can buy.
