Location: Nilgiris district, Tamil Nadu
Area: Ooty lake 15 ha; Tr. Bazaar 3 ha
Altitude: 2000 - 2100 ha
Description of site: Includes three freshwater lakes,
namely, Ooty lake, Pykara dam reservoir, and Tr. Bazaar. Ooty lake and Pykara
dam are man-made. The maximum depth of Ooty lake is 10 m, average depth is
3m
Climatic conditions: Temperatures range from 5°C
to 25°C
Principal vegetation: The lakes are surrounded by
tea plantations, grasses, and exotics
Land tenure: Ooty lake is owned by Tourism Development Corporation,
Ooty Municipality. Pykara dam and Tr. Bazaar are under the Tamil Nadu Electricity
Board. The area surrounding Pykara dam is under the ownership of the Forest
Department, whereas the land around Tr.Bazaar is a private tea estate
Fauna: A waterfowl census conducted in 1993 revealed
the following species: Amraurornis phoenicurus (50), Alcedo atthis (10), Halcyon
symrnensis (7), Gallinula chloropus (19), Tringa hypoleucos (47), Egretta
garzetta (64), Motacilla cinerea (42), Motacilla maderaspatensis (4), Phalacrocorax
niger (72), Vanellus indicus (13), and Bubulcus ibis (1).,Pther fauna include
sambar, barking deer, panther, and jackal
