IRELAND’S ISLAND WALK
This is a walk on three of Ireland’s most beautiful and historic islands. Each tour is led by one of Ireland’s best known archeologists and an expert on walking in the area. You arrive in Westport, a wonderful town nestling under the shadow of Croagh Patrick, which has the distinction of being one of the few planned towns in Ireland. The picturesque town dates back to the 18th century and its design and layout are credited to James Wyatt (1746-1813). Your comfortable accommodations are just outside of Westport. Transportation is provided so that you can go into Westport at night to listen to traditional Irish music in one of the true centers of this wonderful music.
By day, you will visit the outlying islands and the area surrounding Westport to explore the history and the natural world of this picturesque area. You will visit Inishbofin (Bofin Island) which lies 7 1/2 miles off the coast of Connemara. Inishbofin has a varied history. In the 7th century St. Colman founded a monastery there, remains of which can still be seen. In the 16th century Grace O’Malley the female pirate who fought the English and helped to lead the rebellion in the west of Ireland tried to fortify the place. It is said that she was unable to dig through the rock which lies beneath the surface. Now Inishbofin has a population of just 180 hearty souls.
In 1652 the English army of Oliver Cromwell captured Inishbofin and used it as a prison camp for monks and priests. The fortress Cromwell built above the harbor is guarded now only by birds but its remains still stand as a reminder of the island’s violent past. You will also visit Inishshark (Shark Island) and Inishturk (Turk Island) to give you a pleasant walk and a real feel for life in these remote parts of the world. Landing on the islands is subject to weather and tidal conditions, of course.
You will also have an opportunity to visit Ballintubber Abbey, “the abbey that refused to die” which survived through wars and the repression of invaders. Mass is still said in this abbey where it has been said for 700 years.
Accommodations are in Bed and breakfasts and guesthouses and feature private bathrooms.
SATURDAY
Arrive in Westport. Your accommodation for the next three nights is at a country house on the outskirts of the town. After dinner, a briefing of the coming week’s activities will be given.
SUNDAY
9 miles, 900 feet of gradual ascent. Our program begins by coach to Connemara, where we walk to Mam Fan which translates to the pass of the birds. There is a holy well here, a small chapel. Pilgrimages were held here to commemorate St. Patrick’s visit to Mam Ean. This practice deteriorated and was replaced by a festive occasion of singing, dancing, matchmaking, drinking gotten (moonshine) and faction fighting. The winners were deemed as those who drew first blood. Leaving the pass we face downhill and enter the Inagh valley along a quiet country lane until we reach Lough Inagh lake.
MONDAY
A 20 minute transfer by coach will bring you to Ballintubber Abbey “The Abbey that refused to Die” founded by King Cathal O’Connor in 1216. After a tour of the Abbey and grounds you will walk the ancient pilgrim path Tochar Phadraig. Walk ends in Aughagower.
TUESDAY
Your coach leaves for Killary Harbor passing en route the Erriff Valley and Leenane Village. Our six mile Killary Harbor walk begins along a road dating back to 1846. It was built during the Great Famine to give relief work to locals in return for food. Killary is truly spectacular and is the only fjord in Ireland and the British Isles. Midway through your walk you will stop for a picnic lunch, before setting off to meet your bus. By early evening you’ll arrive at Cleggan Harbor, and following a short boat trip you arrive at the island of Inish Bofin.
WEDNESDAY
After breakfast you shall set off to walk the west end of Inish Bofin. This remote island with a population of just 180, has many sights and places of interest to take in. We’ll see everything from cliff forts and monastic sites to the great sandy beaches and even a Cromwellian Castle. There’s the island’s seal colony to view and a deep sea cave and arch system which you can actually climb into. At around lunchtime we’ll stop for a picnic lunch and later set sail for Inish Shark. Landing on the island is subject to tide and weather conditions. Inish Shark is said to be the former home of Oscar Wilde’s mother for a very short time but is now famous for it’s deserted village where nobody has lived since 1960. After walking through the many different field systems, we again set sail, this time to Inish Turk in Co. Mayo. We will be greeted on the island by a local family and taken to our Guest House.
THURSDAY
After breakfast we will set out on a tour of the island. You will find Inish Turk a truely unique experience, as there is no daily ferry, any visitors that do arrive are made to feel very welcome indeed. It’s an island wholly dependent on the traditional activities of farming, fishing and local craft businesses such as curragh building etc. Your walk ends at the mouth of the harbor.
FRIDAY
Short sailing to Clare Island. Clare Island is synonymous With Grace O’ Malley the formidable ruler of the Clew Bay district during the second half of the 16th century. One of the most interesting places on the island is the remains of the late fifteenth century Cistercian Friary, founded by the monks of Abbeyknockmoy in Co. Galway. According to local folklore, following the death of Grace O’ Malley in 1600 her remains were interred in the decorated O’ Malley Wall Tomb in the Friary. The Chancel Vault was once covered in Fresco painting, patches of which remain. Later you shall have lunch before catching our next boat to Roonagh Pier.
