Krishnagiri is about 300 m to the north of the road. To reach it, you have first to negotiate a steep climb — in first gear please — to discover two little boys running behind you: the parking officers! Treat them gently; they are just kids. The parking charge is Rs 3. Give them change (they never have any); in exchange they will produce a suspect looking bill. That’s that. Move on. There is only one shady tree perched at an incline. To park there, maneuver fall skillfully lest you on the other side.
Now, you have to pay one more rupee to a man seated inside the gloomiest room ever to be found in our sun-drenched tropics. Entering the dark chamber from the bright exterior, all you see at first are big red stars. Even before you’ve got your bearings you hear a gentle voice from the right, “Ticket this side, please.” Finally, whether you climb up all the 500 steps, each about a foot high, or not, depends on your destiny. My advice to men and women above 50: “Look up, take a few snaps, turn back. Never mind that one rupee.” To those above 40: “You have to make a once-in-a-lifetime decision.” To 25year-olds and below: “Climb on, smiling... And, huffing and puffing when you reach the top, don’t be disappointed about seeing nothing worthwhile. Enjoy the silence and the fresh breeze.” Move west for the other forts, and, further, if you want to enter the deeper folds of the Eastern Ghats.

Here are a few tips for motorcyclists: The Deccan Plateau is a wonderworld, but must not be exploited on old tyres and tubes. You are bound to have a puncture. And pushing a bike on flat tyres on mountainous roads is a nightmare even for the toughest.
Unless you are a hardcore adventurer, travel in a group or at least with a pillion rider. Leave solo rides to daredevils.
You attract accidents, breakdowns or quarrels if you mount your bike in a depressed or aggressive mood. Cultivate a quiet concentrated disposition and all will go well.
Have your bike thoroughly checked before starting the journey and carry a spare spark plug, a vapor sealer and a foot pump.
