LATA BERKOH
For the early sections of this trail, see the notes on the Kuala Tahan to Bumbun Tabing and Rentis Neram Trails.
The boat trip up Sungai Tahan to the cascades at Lata Berkoh is one of the most scenic and photogenic in the park. For these reasons, it is a highly recommended experience for any visitor. The trip takes about one hour and on sections of the return journey the boatman may turn the motor off for the boat to glide downstream.
On various sections of the river the fern covered trees on either side meet to the river has travelled some 50 kilometres (30 miles) from Gunung Tahan by the time it reaches the cascades, the waters are generally shallow. The rocky riverbed is suitable for paddling and wading in the cool clew waters. The waters here and in other isolated parts of the park have a slight clear tea colouring resulting from the natural decay of vegetation that falls into the river.
The cascades mark the limit for navigation along the river. Here, the bubbling waters provide an invigorating natural spa bath and the riverbanks are popular for Picnics and relaxation. There is a fishing lodge and camping ground next to the river far those who want to stay overnight, and bookings should be made at the TNR
The alternative to the boat trip to the cascades is a hike of 9.5 kilometres (6 miles) or 3-5 hours (one way). With stops along the route it makes a pleasant day’s return walk on a well-defined trail. Many visitors take the boat up to the falls and walk back or vice versa.
The hide at Bumbun Tabing and the nearby river crossing are good places to rest and spend some time looking for animals. About ten minutes further on the trail crosses Sungai Wa and continues on to where Lubuk Lesong is reached. Turn left for a short walk to this deep swimming spot on Sungai Tahan. The broad pebbly beach and adjacent vegetation is photogenic and another good spot to relax, swim or picnic. The light conditions along the river for photography are poor so keen photograhers are advised to use fast film or a tripod
From this junction it is around 15 minutes along the main trail to the left turn to Lata Berkoh. The main trail continues on to Kuala Trenggan and Gunung Tahan. The journey to Lata Berkoh from here on follows a narrower trail that crosses several gullies and ridges. The trail leads to the banks of Sungai Tahan where boats drop off passengers. Caution needs to be exercised if the river is high and flowing rapidly. If this is the case walkers will need to be ferried across by the boatmen sitting on the opposite bank. The last 500 metres (550 yards) walk to the cascades follows the river and passes the camping grounds and the lodge.
Adventurous walkers may want to explore the pools and rapids further upstream where there is a rudimentary trail to follow.
TRAILS THROUGH SIMPANG TUALANG
Simpang Tualang (Tualang Junction) is a major fork in the trail system on the western side of Sungai Tahan. From here a number of walks head north and south on the western side of Sungai Tahan and Sungai Tembeling.
The first obstacle in any of these journeys is the river crossing at the mouth of Sungai Tahan. There is a track from the TNR down the bank of Sungai Tembeling that leads to the boat refuelling raft right at the mouth of the Tahan. Passing boats take walkers across Sungai Tahan for a small, negotiable fee.

SIMPANG TUALANG
Once across Sungai Tahan, the path on the other side leads up through the small village housing the TNR staff and their families. This path is quite steep, and Sumpur, walkers should allow an hour to reach Park Headquarters the junction from park HQ. The trail into the forest begins to the left of the mosque, on the hill-slope at the back of Resort Tahan village. At a fork soon after Simpang Toan Tualang the trail to the right (north) is Simpang, known as Ulu Tekah, and leads to Bumbun Cegar Anjing (trail 2b) and Bumbun Tabing (the latter by crossing To Jerantut Sungai Tahan). The left fork leads to Gua Telinga (trail 2c) and beyond the caves to hides, hilltop views and the Rentis Tenor. The next section is a long difficult climb to the Gunung Sumpur ridge.
The walk passes large strangler figs and a giant tualang tree with an extensive buttressed root system and towering white trunk. At Simpang Tualang look for epiphytic ferns and large Feather-leafed Orchids high up on the branches.
SIMPANG TUALANG TO BUMBUN CEGAR ANJING VIA ULU TEKAH
The three hour (one way) journey along this trail exhibits all the classic features of the tropical rainforest ecosystem. The trail is 4.5 kilometres (3 miles) in one direction and can be an alternative approach to Bumbun Tabing and a return walk to Kuala Tahan via Lubuk Simpon.
The trail crosses many small tributaries of Sungai Tekah, and eventually passes into the catchment of Sungai Dayang. One sizeable tributary of the Dayang is crossed, and then the trail branches.
The trail to the left is the Rentis Tenor (trail 5) while the trail that continues to the right is the Ulu Tekah Trail, running about 400 metres (440 yards) to another saddle, and then a kilometre or so (less than a mile) to Sungai Tahan and Bumbun Cegar Anjing.
The salt lick here is artificial and was established to attract deer and Seladang. The hide accommodates eight people.
There is some secondary vegetation here suggesting some past clearing (the site was once an airfield). As a result. the birds are different, with coucals and jungle fowl often seen. Birdwatching is good along other parts of the trail too with pittas, trogons, fire-backed pheasants, fork-tails, and broadbills all in evidence.
To continue on to Kuala Tahan, cross Sungai Tahan and return via the Bumbun Tabing Trail (trail le) or the Rentis Neram Trail (trail I f).
