The trip from Sligo on board the Wild Rose Waterbus to the 17th century Parkes Castle is but a short walk from the centre of Sligo City and is not to be missed! Your fifty minutes cruise takes you peacefully up the Garavogue river past Hazelwood onto the majestic waters of Lough Gill.
On board you can relax on the sun deck or enjoy refreshments in our bar. You can see for yourself why the Nobel Prize-winning Poet, W.B Yeats, was inspired to write such beautiful poetry about this area. View the Isle of Innisfree, the subject of Ireland’s most popular poem. Why not see if you yourself can compose a few lines to describe the beauty of the surrounding area? You might just surprise yourself.
After a one hour stop- off at Parkes Castle Visitor Centre, you will return to Sligo on the north side of Lough Gill, passing historic Church Island.
We will also give live recitals of W.B Yeat’s poems which are associated with the lake. This is a unique touch which has a special appeal to our visitors.
The cruise on the Wild Rose Waterbus takes in a number of places of local cultural and historic significance. These include:
Historic Church Island with its 6th century monastic ruins, St Angela’s College, Rivers Bonnet and Garavogue. Also the places of inspiration for much of the writings of the acclaimed poet William Butler Yeats: The Lake Isle of Innisfree, Slish Wood, Dooney Rock, Hazelwood and Benbulben mountain.
This picturesque countryside boasts spectacular scenery. From the uniform shape of Knocknarea mountain to the impressive plateau-topped Benbulben mountain and the jagged summits of the North Leitrim Range. These mountains are distinctive landmarks of Co. Sligo and Co. Leitrim and will take your breath away. From the Lakeshore rises splendid wooded landscape with such a variation of vegetation as to produce at least "Forty Shades of Green".
Parkes Castle (Co Leitrim): Situated 7 miles from Sligo and 4 miles from Dromahair. Under the auspices of Ducas, the National Heritage Council– this is a restored 17th century Plantation castle. The Castle boasts magnificent examples of the craftmanship of that period and an outstanding audio- visual presentation of local history together with qualified guided tours. A visit to the Castle takes approx. 1 hour and can be included in your itinerary. A must for the history enthusiast.
Some Operators may find it advantageous to avail of a one-way lake trip, i.e embarking at Parke’s Castle and disembarking at Sligo (Doorley Park) or indeed vise/versa. This cruise takes 50 minutes.
No visit to Sligo or Leitrim is complete without a cruise on the Wild Rose Waterbus!
