Take a step back in time with a visit to Strokestown Park, Co. Roscommon
Amidst the rolling hills and tranquil lakes of county Roscommon, set in one of Ireland’s finest Georgian towns is a treasure. Why not come and experience this treasure for yourself?
Strokestown Park was home to the Mahon family from the 1600’s to 1979. In 1979, Mr Jim Callery, a local businessman, purchased the house, its contents and the 300-acre estate. After what is regarded as one of the largest privately funded restoration projects this country has seen to date, Strokestown Park House was opened to the public. The House has been painstakingly restored to its former glory. For those with an interest in history, Strokestown Park offers a remarkable insight into the past. Professionally guided tours allow you to experience Georgian Ireland at its finest. See Ireland’s last remaining Galleried Kitchen. The lady of the house never entered the kitchens; the proceedings could be viewed at a "safe" distance from her gallery above.
Strokestown Park is also home to The Irish National Famine Museum, which is situated in what were once the stable yards of the "Big House". This Museum uses original letters and documents from the Strokestown Archive, to explain the circumstances of the Great Irish Famine of the 1840’s. The collection is now regarded as the single best, private archive on the Great Irish Famine in the world. This collection will be of benefit to both scholars and those with a passing interest in history alike.
The Six Acre Walled Garden has been faithfully restored and comprises a 4-acre pleasure garden and a 2-acre Georgian fruit and vegetable garden. The herbaceous border has been entered into the Guinness Book of Records as being the longest in Ireland and Britain. The glass-houses date back to 1780 and are probably the oldest of their kind remaining in Ireland. Old varieties of fruit and vegetables are grown here using traditional methods. Why not come and experience a relaxing stroll in our gardens at first hand???? Rest assured, you will not be disappointed.
So if you are travelling to the West of Ireland, Strokestown Park is not to be missed. A great day out for families, groups and individuals. Why not complement your day with a visit to the carvery restaurant situated in the former Granary? You can enjoy a light snack or choose from our extensive lunch menu. Full on site car and coach parking bookstore, gift shop and garden shop are available.
A visit to Strokestown Park will be an experience you will never forget.
