Walking Through Time... Linking the Natural and Cultural Landscapes, Strokestown, Co. Roscommon
You love being in the great outdoors, savouring the fresh air, the fragrance of wild flowers and the silence, broken only by birdsong. As you walk along a quiet track, have you ever wondered why a mountain formed here or why a river flows there? Have you wondered why certain plants grow in particular habitats or observed that valleys have different shapes? Why not join us in the beautiful surroundings of Strokestown, County Roscommon, in Ireland’s wonderful west, to learn about the evolution of the natural environment. Our trained guides will walk you through the local countryside and teach you how to read the landscape.
Come with us on a Walk through Time......and we’ll show you the fundamental
impact which the natural history has had on the social and cultural heritage
of Strokestown. Start with a visit to the marvellous Famine Museum and Gardens
at Strokestown Park and our town’s Heritage Centre. Then walk with us and
see the continuing impact of the Great Famine on the landscape where you’ll
experience abandoned cabins and long-barren cultivation ridges (lazybeds)
etched in the landscape. Step back hundreds of years to visit an old flax
mill or Mass Rock from the Penal days.
Step across 450 million years of geological time to reach the top of Sliabh
Bhán (the White Mountain) for panoramic views of the territory of the legendary
Queen Maeve of Connacht and her warriors. See the lakelands at your feet and
observe where the River Shannon has altered course since the Great Ice Age.
See wild foxes and wild flowers on the mountain and listen to the silence
of the forest. Return to tea and a chat over a quiet pint in an old pub, or
experience the grandeur of fine dining at Strokestown House. Perhaps you’d
like to stimulate your mind and spirit at our Poetry Festival, held annually
each May long weekend. It’s your choice!
If you’d like to really connect with the Irish landscape and its people, then come to Strokestown for an active walking holiday and learn about the impact of the Great Famine on the countryside through time. Starting in April 2002, a trained community guide will walk with individuals or groups, pointing out key features of interest in the landscape, offering you and your friends a unique cultural experience which you’ll never forget. We can guarantee you the time of your life!
