Kylemore Abbey Estate - a remarkable haven in the heart of Connemara
Set in the heart of the Connemara mountains is the renowned KYLEMORE ABBEY ESTATE. Its fame is derived from its status as a premier tourist attraction and international girl’s boarding school. It is equally famous for its unique features such as the magnificent Gothic Church, its quality restaurant and traditional pottery. Kylemore is also home to one of the finest craftshops in Ireland and the recently restored Walled Garden, all of which are set in the tranquil surroundings that are such a special attraction of Kylemore.
The castle was built in 1868 and is one of the great Baronial castles of this period remaining in Ireland today. In 1920 the Castle turned into an Abbey, when it became the home of the Irish Benedictine Nuns. An exhibition is on display in the main reception rooms in the Abbey, tracing the history of the estate and that of its various owners.
The estate possesses some features unique to the West Coast of Ireland. Notably, the recently restored Neo-Gothic Church from circa 1870. This building is a miniature Cathedral with impressive stained-glass windows, columns of colourful marble and intricate carvings throughout.
The Walled Garden was one of the most impressive in Victorian Ireland. Most of its garden features and buildings have now been restored. These include the formal flower garden, kitchen garden, borders & walks, head gardener’s house, bothies and limekiln. Two of the glasshouses of the original range of seventeen, have been restored (one open to the public).
And last but not least, the Kylemore Abbey Craftshop stocks a very comprehensive range of Quality Irish-made products including fashion, glassware, pottery, books and other gifts. Many products are unique to us, such as our own hand-crafted pottery. Our shop and restaurant also stock food products which are home-made by the Benedictine Nuns.
Those with a passion for history, nature and the very best of Irish Crafts will find something of interest at Kylemore.
The Benedictine Nuns at Kylemore continue to work tirelessly at restoring the estate and opening it to the education and enjoyment of all who visit, carrying on the unique Benedictine tradition, spanning over 1500 years of warmth and hospitality.
