Award Winning Derryglad Folk Museum
Member of the Irish Museums Association.
No trip to the midlands is complete without a visit to the Derryglad Folk Museum, which is hidden in South Roscommon. This heartland of Ireland is a land of lakes and rivers and of unspoiled and unexplored countryside. The collection deals with Farm & Folk life in Ireland from the 18th century to the recent past.
The museum is privately owned and run by the Finneran Family and houses a unique 25 year collection of over 3, 000 items. These include; horse-drawn machinery restored to the original working order, tradesmans tools and buttermaking equipment. For those with an interest in the lifestyle of bygone days, the Museum hosts laundry memorabilia, old and rare washing machines, 1930’s old-style thatched bar & grocery, old-style sheep shears, radios, gramophones and a large collection of 78rpm records, shop dockets and bill-heads, as well as much, much more.
For students, a visit to the museum is of great benefit in their study of our history, heritage and folk culture. It’s also a great chance to see and learn how their fore-fathers lived and worked. The Museum also provides a remarkable insight into how our fore-fathers were so self-sufficient.
For the not so young, it’s a step back in time, or a nostalgic trip down memory lane, and a picture of bygone days.
Derryglad is the ideal base to visit other attractions in the area including:
Glendeer Open Farm, Drum Heritage Centre, Athlone Castle, Athlone Leisure World, Kiltoom Stables, Athleague Angling Centre, Knockcroghery Claypipe Visitor Centre and Roscommon County Museum. Alternatively, take an adventure Viking Cruise on the River Shannon, or enjoy our mapped and sign-posted cycle and walking routes. Also located in South Roscommon are The Hodson Bay Hotel, many fine B&B’s and Caravan and Camping facilities. Pitch and Putt, Golfing and Fishing are among the many enjoyable activities available.
