Oideas Gael Language & Cultural Activity Holidays, Gleann Cholm Cille, County Donegal
Why would over 2, 000 people, from 22 different countries, spend a week or more annually, in a beautiful but remote valley in Southwest Donegal?
Increasing international interest in the Irish language makes Gleann Cholm Cille the spectacular location for Oideas Gael’s Irish language courses & cultural programmes.
Courses on offer includes Irish language for adults (all learning levels), Hill-walking, Donegal Dances, Marine Painting, Archaeology, Landscape & Environment, Bodhrán & Flute-playing and Celtic Pottery.
Oideas Gael also organises ‘Active Culture Programmes’ streamlined for groups, with learning workshops each morning and energising afternoon walks led by expert guides.
The cosmopolitan nature of these Irish language courses & bi-lingual holidays ensures that ‘The Glen’ is a lively centre of cultural activity all through the summer, with the best of traditional music & craic (Irish expression for "fun")each night.
All creeds, professions and nationalities come together to learn and enjoy the richness of Irish culture. Many return year after year to renew friendships, to brush up on their ‘Gaeilge’ and to experience the living-culture of the Gaeltacht.
Glencolmcille or Gleann Cholm Cille, in Gaelic, is an attractive area for the visitor, even if not participating in the Oideas Gael programmes. It is internationally renowned for its community spirit and the tremendous work of Fr James McDyer in the 50s and 60s. His legacy includes the remarkable Folk Village Museum showing in detail how the community developed socially over the last three hundred years. The village includes several cottages & craft area with tearooms, bringing us back to the living conditions of our resilient forefathers.
There are many accommodation options available in the area, including the Glencolmcille Hotel in Malinmore, overlooking Rathlin O’Birne Island and the sweeping Atlantic Ocean. (073 30003).
Nearby Malinbeg has the enchanting Silver Strand and Táipéis Gael weavers who spin and design their own traditional tapestries.
7 miles further brings you to Slieve Liag, Europe’s highest sea cliff, visited by thousands of people annually.
Are you about to deny yourself the holiday of a life-time? Think of the wild beauty of the Donegal Gaeltacht, think of Glen cholm Cille!
