The Cavan and Leitrim Railway - Telling the story of the Golden Era of Steam Transport
The Cavan & Leitrim Railway is a heritage
railway, specially geared towards the tourist and railway enthusiast. At the
Cavan and Leitrim Railway, we invite everyone who comes to Dromod to make
a journey back in time on the old narrow-gauge railway. Through the efforts
of a few dedicated volunteers, we can bring back the ambience of the golden-age
of steam transport in Ireland. For the older visitor, we evoke memories of
a bygone-era and for the young, we give them their first experience of the
magic of steam-powered transport. People who have heard of this famous railway
visit Dromod from places as far away as Australia and Japan, to enjoy the
atmosphere of the railway and its associated characters.
We cater for the general public, tourists, children, Old Age Pensioners and
railway enthusiasts. We also run special events; such as "The Vintage Day"
(the Sunday of the May Bank Holiday), and our very popular "Hallowe’en night",
when we give over 800 children and their parents a thrilling " ghostly" experience.
December is a particularly special month for parents and children, because
of Santa’s annual visit to the narrow gauge railway. Can you afford to miss
it?
Group Bookings
We also cater for tourist groups. We must receive advance booking of at least two days. We can look after up to 120 people at a time. They ride on the train and are given a history of the old-line and a tour of the workshops, where we restore all the old vehicles. Traditional music is available by prior arrangement. A special vintage bus is available to convey passengers on a short tour of the scenic countryside along the Shannon. N.B, when running the steam engine it takes three hours to get it ready, and this must be taken into consideration when booking a tour.
Opening Hours
The railway is open from 5th January to 23rd December, with steam trains in operation on weekends from Easter to September ( depending on loco availability). Diesel and railcar operate during the week, with steam by special arrangement.
