Burrenbeo – the living Burren is an information
and educational project which aims to promote a more inclusive and sustainable
approach to the management of the Burren.
The Burrenbeo website features over 250 pages of professionally researched and beautifully presented information on all aspects of the Burren region. The website offers a comprehensive and informative insight into the natural and built heritage of one of Ireland’s most fragile landscapes.
In a world where the importance of sustainable land use - particularly through agriculture and tourism - in conservation is increasingly being recognised, burrenbeo represents an innovative, inclusive and timely effort to put people – local and visiting communities - firmly in the conservation
picture. Where better to do this than in the Burren, the jewel in the crown of Ireland’s natural environment, a truly precious landscape, the heritage of which is so closely dependent on its continued human use. Some features of the not-for-profit burrenbeo website include:
# Well researched and presented content, based on a five-year doctoral research programme
# Several hundred high quality digital images taken over the past twelve months
# Hundreds of links to relevant web sites organised according to theme
# Weekly updates including all the happening news from the region
# Three ‘Image Galleries’ featuring the built heritage, flora and orchids of the Burren
# A 540-entry research bibliography of Burren-related publications
# An interactive map of the Burren region describing the main places to visit
# An educational section featuring the work of the local community
Burrenbeo is a not-for-profit project dedicated to the people of the Burren
whose critical contribution over many Millennia to the creation and
sustenance of the Burren’s heritage has been poorly understood and scarcely
appreciated.
