Bharatpur
Bharatpur being close to Uttar Pradesh, its life style was strongly influenced
by it, and was dominated by Jats in the 17th century. It is visited mainly
for it's bird sanctuary -
KEOLADEO NATIONAL PARK. Once the hunting
preserve of the princes of Bharatpur,it is one of the finest bird sanctuaries
in the world inundated with 400 species of water birds. Exotic migratory birds
from Afghanistan, Central Asia, Tibet as well as Siberian cranes from the
Arctiv grey leg geese from Siberia and barheaded geese from china come here
in July/August to spend the winter. The Jat king Suraj Mal had started work
on the fort in 1732 - known as LOHAGARH which took 60 years to build. It is
called Iron Fort because it remained invincible during attacks by the Britishers.
It was able to sustain itself with a powerful resistance due to the ingenious
defensive works, conceived and designed by Maharaja Suraj Mal, the founder
of Bharatpur in early 18th century. The fort has three palaces within its
precincts - Kishori Mahal, Mahal Khas and Kothi Khas. The government museum
in the fort houses antiquities from this region. DEEG, 34 km from Bharatpur,
is known for tis palaces and well preserved gardens. Once the summer resort
of the rulers of Bharatpur, it served as the second capital of the region.
Gopal
Bhawan overlooking the Gopal Sagar, Nand Bhawan, Krishna Bhawan and the
waterworks of the Keshav Bhawan are of interest here. DHOLPUR; it is known
country-wide for its locally-quarried red sandstone. Being close to Agra
Dholpur witnessed many important battles. Jhor, a village 16 km from
Dholpur, was the site of the oldest Mughal garden in the sub-continent.
Started by Babar it was discovered in the late 1970s. Mach Kund, a lake
surrounded by over a hundred temples, lies a kilometer away and only comes
to life once a year.
