Himalayas provide fertile ground for winter sports. Joshimath, traditionally a pilgrim centre, is now being developed as a skiing resort for Garhwal.

A ropeway is under construction to take vision from the town at 6,000 ft. to the slopes at Auli and Gorsain near Kuari Pass at 12,000 ft. The panorama of Himalayan snow peaks from Kuari is perhaps the most splendid in the world.
Gulmarg in Kashmir is India's most popular and best developed skiing resort with the most modem equipment. Ice skating is also available at Gulmarg.

Narkhanda near Shimla provides skiing slopes from January to April. Kurfi and slopes of Rohtang Pass are also sites for skiing. Shimla offers facilities for ice-skating, ice-hockey, fissure skating and speed skating.
