Wyand situated at a height
of 700 to 2,100 meters above sea level has unique geographical position. It
is

surrounded
by Nilgiries and bounded by Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. In ancient times -it
was ruled by the Rajas of the Veda tribe and later came under the control of
the Pazhassi Rajas of Kottayam's royal dynasty, Tipu sultan of Mysore and
the British. This district has the highest concentration of tribals in
Kerala. KALPETTA, famous Anathanthaswami Jain temple is situated Puliyarmala
near Kalpetta. It is the headquarters of Wynad district. About 14 km west of
Kalpetta lies CHEMBRA PEAK situated at 2100 meters above sea level and is
ideal for trekking. POOKOT LAKE, is the beautiful natural fresh water lake
surrounded by evergreen forests and wooded hills. There is a fresh water
aquarium with wide varieties of fishes. THE GLASS TEMPLE OF KOOTTAMUNDA is
located 20 kms away on the slop of 'Vellarimala' dedicated to Parswanatha
Swami, third thirthankara of the Jain faith.
LAKKADI is a place of
great scenic beauty with picturesque hills, streams and luxuriant
vegetation, one of the highest location in Wynad and gets the second highest
degree of rainfall in the world. Three km from here is Pookate lake, the
natural fresh water lake, very deep and wide, and is one of the rare
reservoirs of water in Wynad, surrounded on all sides by meadows and hills.
