Calicut
is the town where the first European, Vasco-de-Gama, had landed at Kappad in
1498. Later the Dutch, the French and the British dominated the area. Today
it is one of the important ports on the west coast of India and still
maintains its commercial traditions.

harbour and a site for boat building industry.

Pazhassi Raja Museum: This Museum houses copies of ancient mural
paintings, antique bronzes and old coins. The museum also houses paintings
of Raja Ravi Verma and a section dedicated to personal belongings of India's
first Defence Minister, the late V.K. Krishna Menon.

Lok Anarkavu Temple: Believed to be 1500 years old it is dedicated to
Goddess Durga. The candid murals and carvings on the temple wall are
worth-seeing. Two other temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva are
also located adjacent to this temple.

Kappad: 16 km from Calicut it is a historical beach where Vasco de-Gama
had landed on May 20, 1498 with 170 sailors

Pazhayangadi Mosque associated with the Muslim saint Muhammed Shah is also
located here.

This important historical centre was the capital of North Kolathiri Rajas
for many centuries. It was once a premier port of ancient Kerala. It came
into importance with the arrival of the Portuguese in the 15th century.
Morco Polo has referred to this place as a great Emporia of spice trade. ST.
ANGELES FORT is built by the first Portuguese viceroy in 1505 and since then
it is an important military station in Malabar.

Zhimala : 50 km from Cannanore is an cluster of hills. There is a cave
at the foot of the hills and a mosque further up on the hill. The place is
also known for its medicinal herbs.

Parassinikadavu: (18 km) It is an important, pilgrim centre of Kerala
and has the only temple where 'Theyyam' , a form of folk ritual dance is
performed daily. There is also a snake park near the temple.

Tellichery : (60 km) There is an 18th century fort besides a church
built by German Scholar, Dr. Hermen Gender in 1889 AD. The East India
Company had established its settlement on Malabar Coast here in 1683. The
Maher trading centre established by the French in the 17th century is
located nearby.
» Sulthan Battery: (98
km) This place was known as Ganapathivattam, the fields of Ganapathi. There.
are two caves 16 k.m. from Sulthan Battery famous as one of the earliest
centres of human habitat. There is Chethalayam waterfall 12 k.m. away and 29
k.m. away is the Panamara, the ruins of an historic fort.
