Pilgrimage in Goa

The christian legancy and the gothic architectural style of churches is the specility of Goa. The magnificent and towering churches of Goa make this place a grand pilgimage center for christian.

Churches In Goa

Secathedral, Old Goa :

Se Cathedral is the largest Church in Asia. Its construction was started in 1562, during the reign of Portuguese King Dom Sebastiao.

The building is a mixture of Portuguese-Gothic style, with Corinthian interior & tuscun exterior. To the right of the entrance is the granite baptismal font made in 1532, and is said to have been used by St. Francis Xavier.

At the top the building has the huge 'Golden Bell', which is not only the largest in Goa but in entire Asia. The bell is noted for its rich tone. The main altar is dedicated to St.Catherine of Alexandria, and the old paintings around.

This magnificent church received "The Golden Rose" in 1953 by Pope Pius XII, which is now kept in the Bom Jesus Besilica.

Basilica Of BomJesus, Old Goa :

It is the most popular church in Goa and perhaps the most revered and architecturally accomplished church in India. It is located to the south of the main square and houses the uncorrupted remains of the holy apostle St. Francis' Xavier.

The construction of the basilica started in 1594 and was completed in 1605. The design of the church is said to be inspired from the Jesuits' headquarters in Rome.

The layout of the church is simple but exudes a grand posture and has two chapels, a main altar, a choir, a belfry and a projecting gallery for the use of dignitaries on solemn occasions.

The body of St. Francis Xavier was placed here in a silver casket, which is placed at the top for a religious observation. There are 7 panels on the casket, each of which has got 2 plates, one over the other, which are carved with important scenes from the life of St. Francis Xavier. You will also see sculptures of angels occupying the space between the panels. There is a huge cordon (barrier) to this casket, so you pay your respects from outside this barrier. Both international and domestic tourists visit the Basilica.

Chapel Of St. Catherine, Old Goa :

The chapel is located just west of the Archaeological Museum and was originally built in 1510, by Albuquerque to commemorate his victory of Goa on the St. Catherines Day.

It was raised to the status of cathedral in 1534, by Pope Paul III. Later on, it was rebuilt and enlarged by Governor George Cabrak, who added a inscribed slab to the chapel which reads "here in this place was the doorway through which Gov. Alfonso de Albuquerque entered and took this city from the Mohammedans on the day of St. Catherine in the year 1510 in which honor and memory Gov. George Cabral ordered his chepel to be build in the year 1550 at the expenses of his Highness".

St. Cajetan Church, Old Goa:

This church has been modeled on St Peter's church in Rome and is dedicated to St. Cajetan, an Italian and contemporary of St. Francis Xavier.

It was built in 1655, by the Italian friars of the Order of Theatines, who were sent by Pope Urban III to preach Christianity in the kingdom of Golconda near Hyderabad.

The beautiful facade of the church is built in classical style, with four niches in front bearing the statues of apostles.

Internally, the main body of the church represents a cruciform in plan. The vaults are ribbed and decorated with elaborate floral designs. The altar of St. Cajetan is the largest and is set to the right hand side of the church.

Mary Immaculate Conception Church, Panjim :

This imposing church is located at the main square or the Church square in the heart of the town. It is a main place of worship for people in the city.

The church bell is the second largest in Goa, after the Golden Bell in the Se Cathedral. It was recovered from the ruins of the Church of St. Augustine at Old Goa. The church is also an important tourist attraction of Panaji.

The Church should be visited at night, because If you place a candle over here you will notice that colors of the night and the candle emerge and discharge a beautiful kaleidoscope of white, yellow and orange.

The humungous view guarantees that anyone passing by will be instantly attracted towards this Church.

Holy Spirit Church, Margao

The church is located in the northern part of Margao town at the Old Market Square.

The present structure was built in 1675, and is the main attraction of Margao.

The church is considered to be the finest example of baroque architecture in india. The reredos behind the main altar are quite impressive and are noted for its unique archway in the front, which is richly gilded and exquisitely carved.

Church Of Mae De Deus, Saligao, Bardez :

Its overwhelming beauty is because of its doom shape. The Church is perfect example of Gothic architecture. There are 2 lofty bells inside the Church tower.

The unique church houses a miraculous statue of Mae De Deus (Mother of God), which was brought from the covent of Mae De Deus at Old Goa.

Located on the bus route to Calangute from Mapusa, the church is an excellent example of Gothic architecture.

Temples In Goa

Shri Shantadurga Temple, Kavlem :

This temple is the largest and most popular temple in Goa. It was built in 1713 and dedicated to the "Goddess ShantaDurga".

The beautifully constructed pagoda like temple has a distinct influence of European architecture. In front of the entrance is the six storeyed Lamp Tower ( deepmal ). Marble is used in the interiors of the temple while magnificent chandeliers add to the beauty of the shrine.

The temple has a touch of Kadamba architecture, only of such kind in Goa. It has been built with black basalt stone which is not found anywhere in Goa and must have been transported across the Western Ghats from the Deccan Plateau.

The exquisite carvings inside the temple are still fresh and reminds the grandeur of the Goa's Hindu arhcitectural legacy.
