so steeped in history and legend as the Indian capital, Delhi. It was the
magnet that drew the Mongols, Turks, Persians, Afghans, Mughals and finally
the British, all of whom contributed to its glorious but turbulent past.
The fascination with Delhi was such that even though it was abandoned many
times, its rulers returned to it again and again, rebuilding it seven times.

Park:
Arrive early morning at 0616hrs, and drive through forests of sal and teak
to Bandhavgarh National Park. On arrival, time to rest and relax. In the
afternoon we take a jeep safari with resident naturalist in the national
park.
The Park covers an area of around 448km and although it was constituted
in 1968, this area has been a centre of human activity and settlement for
over 2000 years. Legend has it that the fort at Bandhavgarh (which lends
its name to the National Park and literally translated means "Brother's
Fort -Bandhav = brother; Garh = fort), was given to Lakshman by his brother
Lord Rama, hero of epic Ramayana, to keep watch over Lanka, ruled by the
demon king Ravana. Around 10th-14th century AD, this region was ruled by
the Chandela dynasty, which built the famous temples of Khajuraho. Presence
of adequate water-bodies, grasslands and dense forests make Bandhavgarh
an ideal habitat for the animal life of the region. 25 varieties of mammals
inhabit the jungles of Bandhavgarh and Nilgai, Chowsingha, Chinkara, Wild
Boar, Jackal, Wild Dog, Fox, Porcupine, Ratel and three species of deer
- Chital, Sambar and Barasingha - may be seen in the Park, along with the
Leopard and the Royal Bengal Tiger. Nearly 250 species of birds have been
spotted inside the Park which include Hornbills, Leaf birds, Wood shrikes,
Drongos, Fantails, Bee. eaters, Parakeets and Flycatchers, to name a few.

tents.

:

water birds. Our last 11 km ride to Mandal is on a relatively busy road
through farm land and cultivated fields. All meals and night halt in a simple
hotel, with views of the shimmering Narmada river. The hotel has a nice
garden and all rooms have attached toilets and shower.

7. Mandai to Kanha National park (about 65km ride):
We set "in motion" after breakfast; the initial 6 km are on wide
road, and then we plunge onto small roads which snake through villages and
mustard fields and finally into the shadows of sal and bamboo forests. We
must keep alert as we are cycling through Tiger country! Crossing small
streams, tribal hamlets and village schools we arrive at our delightful
camp at Kanha National Park. The two nights in Kanha will be in Sher Garh
camp which offers all the agreeable creature comforts for our tired limbs
to recover.
Day
8. Kanha national Park:
Early morning and evening game viewing with naturalist to the park. Afternoon
fee to relax and unwind; all meals and overnight in Deluxe fixed camp. Kanha
National Park is among the most spectacular, protected wildlife reserves
in the world. The 1,945km National Park has been compared to N'Gorongoro
National Park of Tanzania, but is far greener and more densely wooded than
N'Gorongoro. It is one of the largest and best monitored Parks in the subcontinent
and definitely one of the best places in the world to see the critically
endangered tiger in the wild. The great sal forests of Kanha National Park
stretching across Maikal hills of Satpura range have given birth to many
jungle adventures, especially the much loved English classic by Rudyard
Kipling - The Jungle Book. Kipling based his tale on the wildlife of Kanha
in the late 19th century and thus Kanha is also known as 'Kipling Country'.
The grassy plateaux, wooded hills and valleys of Kanha are home to the legendary
Sher Khan the Tiger, loveable Baloo the Bear, wise Bagheera the Panther
and the dreaded Rock Python, Kaa. Besides them several great and small mammals,
reptiles and birds inhabit the Park including the largest bovine in the
world - the Gaur. Apart from tiger, the National Park is also particularly
known for a 300 lb, brown, large-antlered, hard-hoofed deer, the existence
of which helped lay the foundations of conservation and protection in the
Maikal hills.
Day
9. Kanha to Jabalpur (drive about 4hrs):
After late breakfast we drive to Jabalpur for overnight train to Agra (departure
at 1550hrs). We travel in 2nd class air-conditioned sleeper coach. Breakfast
in camp, lunch at Jabalpur and packed dinner on board.
Day
10. Agra to Delhi:
We arrive in Agra at around 0600hrs; transfer to local restaurant for wash/change
and hot breakfast. After breakfast guided visit to India's most celebrated
mausoleum-the Taj Mahal. Built as a monument of eternal love by the Mughal
emperor Shah Jahan for his queen Mumtaz, the Taj Mahal looks amazingly graceful
from every angle. It was built over a period of 20 years by 20,000 labourers
and craftsmen and displays superb craftsmanship. The close-up details of
the Taj Mahal are as exquisite as the overall architectural design, with
semi-precious stones and ornamental patterns adorning the marble surface.
After visiting Taj we drive back to Delhi (about 4hrs) in time to board
the return flight to London.
Day
11.
Early morning flight back home.
