North across the Tana River from Kora is the Rahole National Reserve. This reserve of 1,270 square kilometres (508 square miles) was developed to illustrate the potential for local wildlife to co-exist with tribes that live in the area. However, the experiment seems to have failed as poaching is rife and settlements abound. Until it can be developed to ensure a tourism industry with revenues for local pastoralists, the area will remain undistinguished and unremarkable, although there is plenty of splendid scenery.
There are no tourist facilities except at Meru, 40 kilometres (25 miles) upstream. However, in the dry season Rahole is really only accessible from the east, via the Garsen-Garissa road.
