CACTUS BEACH: SPIKY INHABITANT

Wilderness waves (left and right Doint breaks) and no crowds are the draw at Cactus. To earn this you have to drive 800 km west from Adelaide towards the Great Australian Bight and the Nullarbor Plain. Crossing the spinifex and salt pans you finally hit the Southern Ocean, where gangs of “feral surfers” are hunkered in among the sand dunes.

The “feral surfers” are young guys, hard core surf travellers whose principal wordly possessions fit inside a surboard cover. They could be local South Austral­ians or travelling surfers (no one has dared to ask them where they’re from), but ei­ther way they’re extremely jealous of Cac­tus’s uncrowded waters. They don’t mind visitors, but they’re somewhat “photo-pho­bic”, having no desire to see full-colour fea­tures on their “secret breaks” splashed across surf magazines. To this end, they’re well known for sabotaging the equipmentof anyone who looks like a surf photogra­pher. — John Borthwick
