HONEYMOON BAR. Alternative surf cullure
Taiwan
It might be difficult to picture the Californian surfing lifestyle located
on a beach in northeast Taiwan. Nevertheless, that’s why Tahsi — often referred
to by its English name, Honeymoon Bay — has such a strong appeal with those
surfers travelling around Asia looking for something slightly different. For
non-surfers, the beach itself makes for a pleasant experience — a semiblack
sand beach that’s remarkably unspoilt and strangely attractive. Framed by
rugged hills on all sides, it resembles a scene from a Chinese landscape painting.
But that’s not why it’s sought out by wave riders.
The beach faces east, straight out into the Pacific, and picks up any swells
that roll in, resulting in some of the best surfing conditions in the country.
Stop by Jeff’s Surf Shop if you want to rent a longboard or need a stick of
Sex Wax. When it’s time to wind down after a hard day’s wave-catching, head
for the nearby Honeymoon Bay Surf Center — a typical surfer’s hangout run
by Jeff’s brother, Tom. The Center offers Chinese home-style cooking, and
a relaxing environment where you can kick back with some surf videos or talk
wicked waves over a few cold ales.
