KUTA BEACH: PARTYING UNDER THE VOLCANO
Bali, Indonesia
The zoo of heaven or a hell of a circus? Tourists, Bali-high on beer and bungy jumps; Hindu cermonies: an endless. walking supermarket of beach hawkers. Everything under the sun is here — a dazzling enough spectacle to compete with Kuta’s own astonishing sunsets.
Behind the beach two huge bungy towers dominate the skyline. like Martian invaders from The War of the Worlds. Exactly as featured in the bungy advertisements. Tourists choose the sunset moment to let the world know that they can rapidly descend from the almost sacred to the audibly profane.
During the past two decades Kuta township has bloated into a sprawl of enterprises of every kind, attended by hustlers of every persuasion, and has engulfed kilometres of shoreline and interior. But as one longtime Bali lover hopefully whispers, “Don’t worry, one day Gunubg Agung [Bali’s sacred volcano] will just shrug — and the whole circus of Kuta will simply topple into the sea.”
