Kakamega Forest National Reserve was gazetted in 1985, but the status of the park which was scheduled for gazetting two years earlier is still unclear. The 97 square kilometres (39 square miles) comprise the most eastern area of the Congo Central African rain forest, to the east of Kakamega, and is known for its birdlife, mammals and vegetation. Many of the birds and mammals that occur here cannot be found anywhere else in Kenya.
Characteristic species include grey parrots, great blue turacos, Ross’s turacos, red-chested owlets and African broadbills, wattle-eyes and many others. The Angolan black and white colobus may also be found, although in smaller numbers.
