Zanzibar:
Zanzibar and its Jozani Forest Reserve is an off-the-beaten track delight. Zanzibar Island, with its old Arab town and narrow streets, palaces, dank caves, churches and groves of coconuts, cinnamon, cloves, cocoa and pepper, all testify to Zanzibar’s history as an important centre for trade, including the infamous slave trade. The beaches of Zanzibar are lovely and there are some good areas for snorkeling among the wonderful fishes and corals on the reef.

Jozani Forest Reserve
on the southern part of the island, is a small reserve with pandanus palms and other remnants of a once-flourishing indigenous vegetation plus introduced plots of non-native trees. While the reserve is of interest botanically, the presence of duiker, such as the Zanzibar blue duiker (Cephalophus monticola sundervalli) and the dwarf red duiker (Cephalophus callipygus adersi) and the brightly coloured and very rare Zanzibar red colobus (colobus badius kirkii) make Jozani especially interesting. Be sure to bring binoculars for watching the monkeys and birds.
