DAY 1: LONDON - CALAIS (FRANCE) - BRUGES - BRUSSELS (BELGIUM):
You meet your tour Manger this morning at the London Ryan Hotel, then you leave London for Dover and your ferry to Calais, France. Travelling through Flanders, you stop in medieval Bruges, its old buildings a perfect introduction to historic Europe. Sweet tooth? Some of the world’s best chocolates are made here! Then to Brussels to visit the Grand Place and the cheeky Mannekin Pis - memorable sights.
DAY 2: BRUSSELS - AMSTERDAM (HOLLAND):
You see the Chinese Pavillion and the astounding Atomium, before travelling into the Dutch countryside to watch cheese and clog making. Now to exciting Amsterdam, where you see this city of canals the best possible way -from your glass-topped cruise boat. Later you watch sparkling diamonds being cut and polished, then continue to your lakeland hotel.
DAY 3: AMSTERDAM - COLOGNE - RHINE CRUISE - RHINELAND (GERMANY):
You cross the German border and travel to Cologne, to visit the magnificent cathedral, masterpiece of the Gothic style. Following the Rhine you reach picturesque Boppard, where you embark on your leisurely cruise. The river is enchanting, with ancient castles perched above leafy vineyards.
DAY 4: RHINELAND - INNSBRUCK (AUSTRIA):
On through Bavaria today, to admire ‘Mad’ King Ludwig’s fairytale castle at Neuschwanstein (he nearly bankrupted Bavaria to build it). You pause at Oberammergau, noted for its Passion Play (performed every ten years) and glorious frescoed chalets. Continue to mountain-ringed Innsbruck where you see the Golden Roof and the Imperial Palace.
DAY 5: INNSBRUCK - ALZKAMMERGUT –VIENNA:
Steep mountains rise from placid lakes as you reach the Salzkammergut, displaying some of Austria’s most spectacular scenery. The hills are alive as you see the Sound of Music ‘wedding scene’ church at lovely lakeside Mondsee. Then, you follow the Danube Valley past Melk Abbey to your hotel in the Vienna Woods.
DAY 6: VIENNA – SIGHTSEEING:
Your tourshows us the beauty of this elegant city - the Hapsburg’s Imperial Winter Palace, St. Charles Church, the Parliament and City Hall, lovely parks containing statues of Mozart and Strauss, and a walk through the formal Belvedere Gardens. Then, why not trot along to the Spanish Riding School or take an excursion to the impressive State Apartments of Schonbrunn Palace. Viennese pastries or a waltz, anyone?
DAY 7: VIENNA - VENICE (ITALY):
Over the hair-pin bends of the Semmering Pass, and through the forests of Carinthia into Austria’s lake district. You cross the Italian border and the vast Venetian plain, Italy’s richest farmland (growing wheat and maize) and continue to your hotel in the Venice region.
DAY 8: VENICE – SIGHTSEEING:
Your day starts with a sightseeing cruise along the canals to St. Mark’s. The palatial residences seem to float on the water, gondolas bob beneath the Bridge of Sighs - the city itself is a poem. You cruise by St. George Island then see a master create a work of art in glass. Later perhaps combine a lagoon cruise with a memorable seafood lunch, and shopping is the best Italy has to offer.
DAY 9: VENICE - APPENINE MOUNTAINS –ROME:
Farewell to the Merchants of Venice as you cross the Po River, pass Bologna and climb the mountains of the Appenines to join the Autostrada del Sole. After the vineyards of Chianti, you see the Etruscan hill towns of Orte and Orvieto where time stands still. Then to Rome and your hotel in seaside Rome Lido.
DAY 10: ROME – SIGHTSEEING:
You start the day with a guided tour of the Eternal City on its seven hills, seeing the Piazza Venezia and the ancient Imperial Forum, then visiting the Colosseum (where gladiators fought) and St. Peter’s Basilica, where you see Michelangelo’s moving ‘Pieta’. Later, a chance to visit the marvellous treasures of the Vatican Museum. Tonight, why not join the revels at a lively Roman dinner?
DAY 11: ROME - OPTIONAL POMPEII OR CAPRI EXCURSION – SORRENTO:
Today you head south past the Bay of Naples to the clifftop resort town of Sorrento. Perhaps take the opportunity of an optional excursion to the fascinating excavations of Pompeii, a Roman town buried by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79AD. Alternatively, you may wish to sail from Naples to sub-tropical Capri to explore the -magical island.
DAY 12: SORRENTO – FLORENCE:
You pass the monastery of Monte Cassino as you follow the Appenines to the Renaissance city of Florence. Leonardo da Vinci, Galileo, Michelangelo are all names associated with this wonderful ‘City of Art’.
DAY 13: FLORENCE - NICE (FRANCE):
Time to explore Florence’s treasures: the Cathedral, Signoria Square and the Ponte Vecchio. You also see a demonstration of fine Florentine leatherworks. Next you head along the spectacular Riviera highway, in places 2,000 feet above the sea, past Genoa, birthplace of Christopher Columbus. Stunning views over the Principality of Monaco and its harbour before arriving in Nice. Perhaps try your luck in a Monte Carlo Casino tonight!
DAY 14: NICE - ITALIAN LAKES - LAKE LUCERNE (SWITZERLAND):
First stop, a perfume factory to ‘scent’ us on your way. Back into Italy and the beautiful Italian lakes, then through the mighty Gottard’s spectacular alpine scenery where cascades crash down the mountains and dissolve into mist. Tonight why not try a fondue at a unique folklore show?
DAY 15: LUCERNE AT LEISURE:
You visit Lucerne’s emotive Lion Monument. Then maybe stroll across the 14th century covered bridge to lakeside gardens, explore some of Switzerland’s best shops or perhaps join an exciting excursion by cable-car up a mountain for superb views of spectacular snow capped peaks.
DAY 16: LAKE LUCERNE - PARIS (FRANCE):
This morning you cross the French border at the Rhine port, Basel. Then crossing Burgundy, and the rolling hills of the agricultural heartland of France, you arrive in the glittering capital, Paris. The city really sparkles at night!
DAY 17: PARIS – SIGHTSEEING:
Sightseeing takes us along the tree-lined boulevards to visit Quasimodo’s Notre Dame, then along the Champs Elysees to see Napoleon’s Arc de Triomphe, and to have a great view of the Eiffel Tower. Tonight this romantic city is yours to explore. Don’t miss the lively nightlife!
DAY 18: PARIS – LONDON:
Alongside the highway to Calais, the cemeteries are a poignant reminder of the great battles of World War I, such as Vimy Ridge and the Somme. Your ferry takes us to Dover, announced by its white cliffs. Then to London where you bid a reluctant farewell to your new-found friends.
