Jaisalmer Fort popularly known as Sonar Kila or the Golden Fort is situated in the Jaisalmer city of Rajasthan state. This was founded by the Bhatti Rajput chieftain Rawal Jaisal in 1156 AD and is the second oldest fort in Rajasthan which attracts a large section of tourists from all over India.
Architecture
This fort built in golden yellow sandstone is 250 feet tall & has a wall of 30 feet high with 99 bastions. There are a number of havelis with balconies & windows and beautiful carved Jain Temples built in 12th and 15th century AD and some palaces inside it. The fort also has 4 gates - Ganesh Pol, Suraj Pol, Hawa Pol & Bhoot Pol. The interior of the fort is painted & tiled in typical Rajput style.
Palaces : The fort has five palaces like the Sarvottam Vilas,
Akhai Vilas, Gaj Mahal, Rang Mahal and the Moti Mahal with beautiful balconies,
pavilions and some exquisite painted murals.
GateWays : The fort is approached through four huge gateways
named the Ganesh Pol, Suraj Pol, Bhoot Pol & Hawa Pol.
Jain Temples : There are a group of Jain temples dating back
12th and 15th centuries and are dedicated to various Jain tirthankars. The
walls of the temples are carved with animal & human figures.

Havelies : Havelies like Patwon-Ki-Haveli, Salim Singh-Ki-Haveli,
Nathmalji-ki-Haveli are famous for their lattice work and are some beautiful
places to visit.
Sam : This is a great place to experience the desert life
of Rajasthan by taking a Camel ride on the sand.
Gadsisar Lake : This is a popular picnic spot of Jaisalmer
where one can enjoy boating in this rain water lake.

Air : The nearest airport is at Jodhpur which is 285 km from
Jaisalmer.
