Sankisa is important in the history of Buddhism as it was here that the Buddha preached his gospel of truth to his mother and other gods. Many Buddhist motifs reflect the event that took place here when Buddha, after his enlightenment, descended from heaven, accompanied with gods —Brahma and Sakra. Chinese travellers Fa-hien and Huien Tsang have given interesting descriptions of the life in Sankisa. Excavations during the previous century by Cunningham unearthed many mounds and ramparts. Presently, there is a village on a high mound and to its south is the famous temple of Bisra Devi.

To reach Sankisa, one has to travel the dusty roads of Farrukhabad district. Lack of guest houses and facilities has not been a deterrent to thousands of monks and travellers who come here. Guided tours start from Agra in the morning and return the same day.
