ROHTANG PASS. The Rohtang Pass
is the divide between the Kullu valley and Lahaul, much of the latter being a cold desert. Lahaul and Spiti are predominantly Buddhist areas, and their comparative inaccessibility has helped preserve their culture.
Keylong is the district headquarter, and lies on the Manali-Leh road. It is
an oasis of fields and Willow trees, surrounded by rugged, snow capped peaks.
There are several monasteries in and around the town. Important among these
are the 12th century Kharding Gompa which has a rich library of Buddhist scriptures,
and the 17th century Shashur Gompa where the Lamas perform spectacular masked
dances.
Keylong also has a Tibetan Centre for performing a—S. On the road to Keylong
is Gonallita. here there is a monastery and an eight story Among all the Indian
states, Himachal Pradesh is truly blessed — it has an endless list of places,
some yet to be discovered. This is hardly surprising considering the immense
cultural and geographical variety of the state.
