Indonesia
Thanks to a life spent in the shadow of its larger neighbour, Lombok — the Indonesian island next to Bali has some of the country’s most beautiful, and least well-known, beaches. The northern beaches are a great jumping-off point for the in¬creasingly popular Gili Islands to the north. But Lombok’s jagged coastline is also fringed with many gorgeous beaches of¬fering secluded tropical escapes straight out of a movie set.
Those in the know head to Kute on the southern coast. A few kilometres further on lies spectacular Tanjung Aan, a wide sweeping horseshoe of fine sand curving round a turquoise bay, guarded at either end by rocky headlands. Great waves crash off the beach, inviting you to paddle out with your board. For the visuals, Tanjung Aan is hard to beat. Your view is only interrupted by infrequent hawkers carrying fresh fruit.
One hotel has already opened nearby, and my advice is to get there before the developers arrive in force.
