Few experiences can replace the visceral excitement of standing amidst a herd of resting elephants, floating in a hot-air balloon over thousands of migrating wildebeest, being in on ‘the kill’ with a pride of hungry lions, or making eye contact with an imposing mountain gorilla.
Wildlife lovers will admire everything from the awesome majesty of the Big Five elephant, rhino, lion, buffalo and leopard to the astonishing variety of beautiful birdlife. They will also marvel in the knowledge that they are following in the footsteps of their Homo habilis ancestors who lived here over three million years ago.
Today, about 30 species of herbivores, two dozen carnivores, a dozen primates, over 1,000 species of birds, numerous reptiles, hundreds of coral reef fish and many more invertebrates offer an opportunity to discover the wonders of the East African ecosystem. This section of the guide discusses the larger mammals and some of the more common smaller species, including their normally observed behaviour and habitats. Separate chapters are also devoted to birds and flora.
