OTHER TRAILS
There are several interesting trails in the less frequented areas of the park, based around the Merapoh and Tasik Kenyir entrances.

7A SUNGAI RELAU TO GUNUNG TAHAN VIA MERAPOH, PAHANG
The western access to Gunung Tahan is a long way from the main access at Kuala Tahan. This trail is also shorter than the main access at Kuala Tahan, and just five days are recommended (although the return ‘run’ has been completed in five hours and 38 minutes!). it is affectionately known as the ‘West Side Story’ by climbers. Getting to the Ranger Station at Sungai Relau is via Merapoh on the Kuala Lipis to Gua Musang road in Pahang State. The turn-off is well signposted and the Ranger Station is just 6 kilometres (4 miles) off the main road

Entry fees are paid here and equipment may be left at the Ranger Station for collection on the return journey. There is a camping area besides Sungai Relau and from here - for a fee - most walkers hire the DWNPPM jeep to travel the next 7 kilometres (4% miles) along a trail to Sungai Juram.

The swing bridge here is the last sign of civilisation for five days. The trail passes through lowland rainforest to the first campsite at Camp Koh besides a river. It involves seven small river crossings and a total hiking time of about four hours.

The trail starts to climb gently on Day 2 until near vertical sections are reached near GunungTahan. Faster walkers can reduce the nights spent on this trek by camping on the summit. But staying on the summit overnight means that groups have to be properly equipped for a cold night.

7B KUALA KOH: FIG TREE TRAIL
Most points of access in this part of the park are via rivers, however, there is a nice short, labelled walk called the Fig Tree Trail (Bulatan Ara). Informative track notes are available from the Ranger Station. The interpretation trail was developed by MNS, DANCED and Perhilitan and takes about two hours depending on interest and stops en route. The trail is hilly and should only be attempted by those who are fit. It commences across the river, opposite the Ranger Station, at the suspension bridge. Points of interest are numbered and visitors are advised to look at the interpretation display in the Ranger Station first to get a good understanding of the rainforest ecosystem.

The trail passes bamboo, epiphytes, ferns, lianas, buttress roots, ginger flowers, rattan, strangler figs, wild hibiscus, fungi and the fig tree. The trail is a very good introduction to the rainforest, as it exhibits most of the features of this ecosystem. Listen for the White-rumped Shama in the forest as well as signs of other animals, like Wild Boar diggings along the trails.

TERENGGANU:GUA BEWAH AND GUA’TAAT
The caves are located within some towering limestone mountains on the foreshores of Tasik Kenyir To reach the caves takes one and a half to two hours fast boat journey from the Visitors’ Centre at Pengkalan Gawi. From across the lake the vertical rise from the water’s edge is a photogenic sight. The walk to the caves is not so much a trail as a ten minute climb up some well constructed wooden steps. One of the entrances is submerged under the lake’s waters, however it is possible to enter the other two caves if the dam water level is not too high. One entrance is close to the lake’s edge. The stalactites and stalagmites deep within the caves are reasonably well developed but a torch is essential to see them properly. The cave entrance is large and the high view across the lake is quite impressive. The caves have historical significance in that archaeological digs have uncovered artefacts and tools dating back to the Neolithic Period, about 6,000 years ago.

7D GUNUNG GAGAU TRAIL
Just beyond Tasik Kenyir stands Gunung Gagua, the second highest peak in Taman Negara after Gunung Tahan. At 1,377 metres (4,518 feet) it is however, substantially lower than Gunung Tahan. Gunung Gagua is located right on the border of the three Taman Negara. states of Terengganu, Pahang and Kelantan.A base campsite and trails to the summit have been constructed.

This five day trek begins with a four hour slow boat trip across Tasik Kenyir from the ferry at Gawi. The base camp can sometimes be difficult to reach, depending upon the level of the lake. Faster boats make the journey in under two hours

The afternoon of day one involves a five hour trek to the campsite at Sungai Perepet. This is followed the next day by a morning walk to Sungai Cicir camp and then an arduous five hour climb to the summit of Gunung Gagau. The next two nights are spent camping at Gunung Gagau. Day three entails a return walk to Gunung Badong and back to the Day 2 campsite.

The return journey to Sungai Perpek makes for a relatively short fourth day, and the return boat is usually arranged for the following morning. The climb to the summit tends to be long and gentle with the steepest sections between Sungai Cicir Camp and the summit. The fishing around the Base Camp at Sungai Perpek is good but a license is required. Trekkers need to ensure that adequate arrangements are made to be collected at the end of the trek -- it is a long way to swim back to Pengkalan Gawi.
