PITCHER PLANT
Pitcher plants are very interesting plants found in several locations in Asia, islands in the Indian Ocean and northern Australia. In Malaysia, there are some 30 species (3 endemic to Peninsular Malaysia and 12 endemic to East Malaysia). Nepenthes macfarienei is one of three species of pitcher plant known from GunungTahan. It is confined to the moss forest high up on the mountain, and the pale form may be distinguished from other species by the cream-coloured upper pitchers.
As pitcher plants supplement their mineral intake by trapping and digesting insects, they can survive in soils that are poor in minerals. Insects are attracted to the sugary secretions that accumulate at the base of the funnel-like plant.The outer waxy rim of the pitcher has evolved so that any insect that enters finds it difficult to escape. The sugary secretions contain enzymes that break down the bodies of trapped insects. A canopy above the pitcher prevents too much rainfall entering the plant and ‘drowning’ it.
FORBIDDEN MOUNTAIN GUNUNG TAHAN
THE FORBIDDEN Mountain’, has long been the source of local myth and legend. A vast monkey standing guard over two pots of magic stones lives on the summit, according to the folklore of Taman Negara’s indigenous people.The Orang Asli people of Taman Negara, the Batek, believe the forest is the home of their ancestors.They hold great respect for their natural environment and only take from it what is necessary for their survival. It is taboo or lawac for them to destroy their natural heritage. Originally the Orang Asli had no need to travel and explore the hills because all they needed for survival could be found in the lowland valleys. Today, guides will willingly escort tourist to the summits of Taman Negara’s hills and mountains.
The summit of Gunung Tahan defeated the first expedition to attempt to gain it in 1863 when the Sultan of Pahang’s team was blocked by the awesomeTeku Gorge. Only in 1905 was it finally conquered by a British-Malay expedition led by the explorer Leonard Wray.
