DISTRICT HEADQUARTERS
Wokha is the district headquarters of the Lothas. It is equidistant at 80 km both from Kohima as well as Mokokchung. It is 58 km from Furkating Railway Station (Assam). Wokha literally means, “counting of heads” in Lotha. It was the place where the ancient Lothas took their census before spreading out into the villages during their waves of migrations. There are monoliths (Longzu) erected by their rich ancestors to exhibit their status. Lothas are known for their colourful dances and songs particularly Shanta. Tokhu Emong and Pikhuchak is their main festivals. The former takes place on the 7th November every year. Opvuram and Lonpensu are their prestigious social shawls for women and men, respectively. Some of the villages, which have the remnants of the old culture, are Longsa, Nrung Longidang, Longsachung and Yanthamo. The land of the death can be seen from Yanthamo. In the middle range, at Lakhuti village, one can find - Tiyulong - a rock. It is believed that if the area around this rock is cultivated drought occurs. Wokha is also famous for fruits like Oranges, Plums, Passion fruits and Bananas. Fresh vegetables and Bamboo shoots are also easily available.
Tourist Attraction in Wokha
MOUNT TIYI
It is a hill with mysterious legends. It is believed by all Nagas that it is the abode of the departed souls. In local folklores, it is said that there once existed an orchard, which could be traced by the lucky ones only. Colourful Rhododendrons are found clasping the rocks and cliffs. The peak offers a panoramic view of the villages, hills and valleys.
TOTSU CLIFF
It is a cliff about 25 km from Tseminyu via Phiro village and lies at about 1,250 metres. It is a chain of a rock, which gets broken. It has a deep gorge in between. According to legend, in the fight between the two different sides of the hill, one lost its right ear and the other lost its head. And truly, both of them have tell tale signs of it. The hill is said to be guarded by a giant snake and a crab. There are small water bodies at the foot of the hill. One of the ponds was the refuge of a legendary man called Nsanthung who lived off the fishes of the pond. He married the spirit of the pond. She was believed to be a kind-hearted woman. One day, enemies came to kill him while he was asleep. As the enemy was first seen by his wife, she woke him up. He therefore, hid himself in the midst of the rocks and his foes could not trace him in spite of their best efforts to locate him. It is an ideal place for rock climbing. On the lower reaches of the hill, Nzu river leisurely flows down to Doyang. This river has a magnificient basin - ideally suited for camping and picnics.
LIPHAYAN GOVERNOR’S CAMP
